If you’re into full on make up with foundation, setting powder, and a setting spray on top, then you’re likely familiar with the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ finishing spray. If you’re not, MAC lets you know that Fix+ is “a lightweight water mist that gently soothes and refreshes skin and finishes makeup.”

Due to its place within the Prep + Prime range and the “finishes makeup” part of its description, MAC Fix+ is commonly believed to “lock in” make up and prolong its wear. But as pointed out in a blog post on Magi-mania.de recently, it’s not actually a setting product at all.

The fact that MAC Fix+ contains neither polymers nor silicones means it cannot technically “seal in” or prolong your make up. That by far doesn’t mean it’s useless, though!

Why the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ face spray might just be one of the best skin care product for summer. Let me elaborate! ↓↓↓

It’s a face mist

First of all, picture this: It’s a typical summer day, sunny and hot. No wind blows your way. What would you give for a little something to cool your head right now this minute?

Cue face mists! Pump out a few spritzes: instant relief! Wow, so refresh, much good!

Face mists are greatly popular in Asia. Some have SPF, some replenish moisture, some remove shine. Pop one into your fridge or keep it inside your office desk and depending on its specific purpose, a face mist can be great for fixing your make up, refill your skin’s water reserves or just as refresher during the day.

Meanwhile in Europe we have mineral water in spray bottles and alcoholic “Beauty Elixirs.” In short, our options are bleak and meagre in comparison. So into this small circle of boring and some highly irritating face mists comes bursting MAC Prep + Prime Fix+!

It’s a hydrating face mist

Let’s take a look at the MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ ingredients:

Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caffeine, Panthenol, Arginine, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PPG-26-Buteth-26, Fragrance, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol.

The balance of humectants and emollients is just ideal for the summer!

Those with oily skin can use this as a stand-alone summer moisturizer both during the day as well as at night, while those with normal to dry skin can either layer it underneath their moisturizer or use as a skin softening toner for additional hydration.

Either way, its thin, lightweight texture absorbs quickly and does not clog pores – another important prerequisite for summer skin care!

As a word of caution, the small amount of fragrance may cause issues for those of you with sensitive skin. Do try the spray first before purchase just in case!

It’s an effective anti-aging face mist

But wait, what are the ingredients marked in green?

Six different antioxidants: cucumber fruit extract, Chamomile extract, Green tea extract, Vitamin E, Caffeine and Arginine.

Beautiful! It’s good to have antioxidants in your skin care. But a combination of several antioxidants is even better!

Antioxidants prevent, reduce and repair cellular damage, inflammations and premature signs of aging caused by free radicals from UV exposure. Plus, some also have additional anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, and/or aid wound-healing. Antioxidants are therefore quite helpful, if not absolutely indispensable ingredients in effective skin care.

But why are antioxidants especially important in the summer?

Recent studies have found that UV damage continues for up to four hours even after coming out of direct sun exposure. This makes proper after-care as vital as prevention, and that is exactly what antioxidants offer.

Bottomline: If you’re concerned about sun damage and skin aging, antioxidants are a must!

Some additional info on antioxidants in skin care products

Always look for at least a couple of antioxidants in your skin care, such as Vitamin A, C, E, Niacinamide, Coenzyme Q10, Green, Black, White tea, pomegranate, grapeseed or fermented yeast extract.

However, because antioxidants are highly unstable by nature and easily lose their efficacy upon contact with light and air, always keep skin care with antioxidants away from sunlight and store in a dark and dry space. Avoid clear as well as jar packaging as much as possible. This way, you can preserve them more easily and ensure they keep fresh.

In the case of your MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ face spray, the pump spray packaging ensures the liquid does not come into contact with air – which is good! But because of the milky clear container, keep the bottle away from sunlight and store inside of a drawer when not in use.

The MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ face spray in my daily skin care routine

This is my summer routine right now: First, double-cleansing. Second, Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel. Third, MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ face spray right before sleep – that’s it!

My skin is prone to clogged pores and breakouts, which is why in the summer, I prefer moisturizers that are as lightweight as possible and contain more humectants, less emollients. MAC Fix+ strikes just the right balance in this regard and sandwiches all these wonderful antioxidants in between.

So yes, I’m really quite in love, love, love with it at the moment, and will use it summers and winters, and forever and ever, and for 100ml of such a neat product, I think it’s an entirely reasonable price too.

Want even more antioxidants in your skin care routine? Consider the Scinic Aqua All In One Ampoule chock-full of various plant extracts, or the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence, which contains Chamomile, Niacinamide and fermented yeast extract, while the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Supplement contains Vitamin E, C and Green tea. Also, download my infographic on the benefits of antioxidants, and don’t forget that you can layer skin care.
